The AC-130 gunship is a heavily-armed ground attack airplane and is a variant of the C-130 Hercules transport plane. Boeing manufactures and supports the AC-130U Gunship aircraft for the U.S. Air Force Special Operations Command. The aircraft represents a major advancement compared to other previous generation gunships. The AC-130 Gunship has a combat history dating to Vietnam. The gunship had destroyed more than 10,000 trucks and was duly credited for its life-saving close air support force protection capability. The AC-130 aircrew earned the Lt. Gen. William H. Turner Award for suppressing enemy air defense systems and for its offensive role during Operation Urgent Fury in Grenada in 1983. The AC-130 also served a primary role during Operation Just Cause in Panama in 1989 for destroying Panamian Defense Force Headquarters and numerous command and control facilities. The aircrews earned the Mackay Trophy and the Turner Award. The gunships were also used during operations Continue Hope and United Shield in Somalia. And recently, AC-130s were employed during Operation Enduring Freedom. The AC-130’s distinctive feature is that it never has a base under its protection lost to the enemy. The AC-130U features include weapon stand-off range, improved first-shot accuracy and a state-of-the-art suite of electronic and infrared countermeasures that greatly enhance the AC-130U’s efficient survival against modern threats. The AC-130U incorporates technologies in the 1990s and is capable of attacking two targets simultaneously. The AC-130U also incorporates features for enhanced maintainability and supportability. The AC-130U is produced at a cost of US$190 million. Today, there are seventeen AC-130U aircraft in active duty service.

First deployed in the late 1960’s the United States air force recognized the heavy weight carrying capacity and long duration flight of the C-130. These attributes made the C-130 an ideal aircraft to be adapted to serve as an airborne gun platform for accurate high volume fire directed at enemy locations.

It’s a lot more expensive now, largely due to it being so LARGE and how shipping is calculated these days, but it’s still manufactured in the United States and available as this 27 piece playset. Set includes the 2 foot wingspan Hercules Gunship, 2 dozen M16 Soldier figures, an American flag with base, and a bonus M48 Patton Tank.

The airplane is modeled after the Lockheed AC-130 and features spinning propellers, rolling wheels with metal axles, cockpit entrance door, rear access loading ramp, dual barrel turret, and 3 pivoting machine guns. The wingspan measures 26.5 inches across, the fuselage 24.5 inches long, and stands 10 inches tall to top of tail. The aircraft and tank are made from slightly stiff olive-green color HDPE plastic with some flashing. The soldiers are made from slightly flexible LDPE olive-green plastic with very little flashing. The flag stands 2.75 inches tall with a gray base and sticker flag. The plane and tank are 1:48 scale and the figures are approximately 1:35 scale.

The first version of this aircraft was produced by PROCESSED PLASTIC COMPANY (Tim Mee’s parent company) in 1990 and modeled after the C-130 Cargo Plane. It is now the main tactical airlifter for many military forces worldwide; over 40 models and variants of the Hercules serve with more than 60 nations. This handcrafted model is painted in the same paint scheme as the original and is painstakingly built from Philippine mahogany by our skilled craftsmen. The C-130 Hercules Gunship has the record for being the heaviest and biggest aircraft to land on an aircraft carrier. When the Korean War started in June 1950 it illustrated that the performance of some transport aircrafts like the C-119 Flying Boxcars and C-46 Commandos were insufficient. In February 2 1951, the United States Air Force released a General Operating Requirement for a new transport aircraft. It was issued to aircraft companies like Boeing, Fairchild, North American, Northrop, Lockheed, Martin Company and Airlifts Incorporated. The transport aircraft would be capable of accommodating 92 passengers or 64 paratroopers, can fly with one engine stopped, and can reach a range of 1100 nautical miles. The Martin Company, Fairchild, Northrop and North American refused to join. The companies, who agreed, proposed nine designs. The Lockheed submitted two designs, Boeing submitted one, Douglas submitted three and the Airlifts Incorporated submitted one. The design proposals were a tight fight between the Lockheed Company and the Douglas. A 130 page proposal for Lockheed L-206 was submitted by the Lockheed team that was led by Willis Hawkins. The president and chief engineer of Lockheed, Hall Hibbard, noticed the proposal and gave it to Kelly Johnson. Hall Hibbard and Kelly Johnson signed the proposal and got the contract designated Model 82 in July 2 1951. In August 23, 1954, the YC-130 prototype made its first flight from the Lockheed plant in California. Its serial number was 53-3397 and it was the second prototype but the first to fly. Stanley Beltz and Roy Wimmer were the pilots of the prototype and Jack Real and Dick Stanton were the flight engineers.
